I do not know the history of the hymn, so I cannot guess what motivated the writer of those words to choose them. However, he missed a great opportunity to explain the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament, between law and grace. Wouldn't you get a greater blessing singing that song if the words said, "Twas law that caused my heart to fear but grace my fear relieved?" That's the gospel. That's the good news. Whereas, the Lord Jesus Christ came to fulfill the law, not to do away with it; nevertheless, the law's requirements cannot be met by our effort. Under law, we are all lost. Under law, we are at best pupils, being taught how our Universe is structured, and how deeply God loves us. In Galatians 3:24, Paul writes, "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." -- Richard Palmquist Send email to frontoffice@truthradio.com with questions or comments about this subject. |
